Using a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, Carissa believes that a client’s experiences throughout their life can influence what they are struggling with in the present. Because of this, she finds it important to look at the whole picture and help clients identify connections between their past experiences and current concerns, including anxiety and stress. In addition, Carissa uses a strengths-based approach, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the positive within each client. She focuses on empowering clients by helping them recognize their strengths and use them as tools to promote growth and change.
When working with children, Carissa focuses on creating a safe and comfortable space where they feel heard, supported, and understood. She uses kid-friendly language and activities to help children learn how to identify their feelings, express themselves, and build coping skills they can use outside of sessions. She also believes it is important to involve caregivers so families can better understand what a child is experiencing and learn tools to support progress outside of sessions.
