As a counselor, Johanna has experience working with adolescents, young adults, and adults, as well as families and groups in a variety of outpatient settings including community mental health centers, schools, and private practice. She has experience working with clients dealing with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, self-esteem issues, chronic illness, caretaking roles, OCD, self-harm behavior, women’s issues, autism spectrum disorder, and ADHD.

Johanna prides herself on creating a strong therapeutic rapport with her clients and being an ally for those from diverse cultural backgrounds. She believes it is through our relationships and connections to others that we grow as individuals and she is dedicated to fostering an environment of non-judgment, support, respect, empowerment, and trust for her clients. Johanna feels that both biological and environmental factors are intertwined in the development and persistence of the daily mental health struggles that people face, and hopes to help her clients achieve a balance in examining the past, living in the present, and looking towards the future in treatment. Johanna feels privileged to be a compassionate guide and partner for her clients on that journey as they learn effective coping skills to embrace, process, and manage their emotions.

Having a personal connection with both mental health issues and chronic physical illness, Johanna possesses unique empathy gained from those experiences and is acutely aware of the significance of the mind-body connection. She approaches her clients with a holistic and integrative perspective which is informed by the needs of each individual client. Johanna utilizes orientations which include Relational-Cultural Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Adlerian psychodynamic techniques, Narrative Therapy, DBT, and mindfulness techniques. Johanna is also an artist and believes a creative approach in counseling can be an incredibly therapeutic way to process our emotions.
